What gets hauled in Grimsby

Most Grimsby work is four kinds of job: aggregate deliveries, commercial site prep, road reconstruction, and excess soil hauled off to approved disposal sites. The employment lands along the South Service Road, the Casablanca Boulevard corridor around the new GO station, the waterfront north of the QEW and the downtown street rebuilds are where much of it happens. Tri-axles move gravel, stone and excavated soil between the active site, the quarry and the disposal site, and a short cycle is what makes the truck earn its day.

Cameron's supplies trucks to municipal and Regional projects across Niagara through the year. Which projects changes with each year's program, so the page does not list them; dispatch knows what is running this season.

Where the material comes from, and where it goes

Grimsby sits on a strip between the lake and the Escarpment, and the stone is on top of the hill. The nearest quarries are in Lincoln, above Beamsville, and they are all Escarpment dolostone, so a Grimsby aggregate run means a climb up and a loaded run down.

Excess soil and demolition debris go the other way, up the hill to the Region's Niagara Road 12 Landfill on Concession 7 Road in West Lincoln. It takes construction and demolition waste, clean concrete, brick and asphalt by the tonne, and commercial clean soil with the Region's approval first. It is closed on Mondays and Sundays, which matters for a demolition crew planning the week. The Region's other outlets, Humberstone in Welland and the Thorold Townline depot, are a long run from Grimsby. Tipping fees change yearly; dispatch confirms the current rate when the job is booked.

Ontario's excess soil regulation (O. Reg. 406/19) requires every load of excess soil leaving a site to travel with a hauling record naming where it came from, where it is going and how much, and the hauler keeps it. From January 1, 2027, clean excess soil can no longer go to landfill, so the reuse site is part of planning the job. In Grimsby the receiving end is governed by the Town's site alteration by-law (2020-44): placing or removing fill takes a Town permit, a haul-route inspection before, during and after the work, and a security deposit.

Rules that change a Grimsby job

One road up the hill. Mountain Road, Regional Road 12, is the Escarpment crossing trucks use in Grimsby, and when the Town closes a downtown block it signs the heavy-truck detour between Mountain Road and the QEW. Across the line in Lincoln, Thirty Road and Mountainview Road are closed to through trucks over 15,000 kilograms registered gross weight since September 2025, with the signage coordinated with Grimsby. The Region is studying a new truck crossing between the QEW and Regional Road 20; the terms of reference were approved in August 2025 and the study has no construction date. For now, a quarry run from Grimsby is planned around one grade.

Spring reduced loads. From March 1 to April 30 the Region limits trucks to five tonnes per axle on posted roads. No Regional road inside Grimsby is on the list this year; the nearest posted stretch is Mud Street West in Lincoln, from Hysert Road to Mountain Road, which is on the way to the quarries along the top. A tri-axle that runs a full load in May runs a fraction of one in March on that stretch, so dispatch plans the truck count for it.

Working hours. The Town's noise by-law (11-22) prohibits commercial construction equipment between 9pm and 7am, so a Grimsby site can legally run trucks from 7am to 9pm. Dispatch schedules the first load to land when the site can take it.

Trucks on Grimsby sites

Jobs here run on tri-axle dump trucks, which typically carry 20 to 22 metric tonnes. Screened grindings and aggregates are delivered by the truckload the same way.

Every truck on a Grimsby job is paid the same rate, whoever owns it.
